New Workshops
Since 2000 I’ve been leading hands-on shooting workshops all over the U.S. and around the world. They’ve ranged from long weekends to two-week adventures on the other side of the earth. Group sizes vary based on the trip, but my goals are always the same – to help you improve as a photographer, come back with pictures you’ll want to share and hang on your wall while having fun and memorable experiences. To me, photography is a great social activity, and more enjoyable when done with people who share a passion for it. These are the classes and trips I have scheduled right now, with new ones added as they’re planned. At the bottom of the page you’ll find a link to galleries of photos from past workshops. If you’d like to be notified as soon as a trip I’m working on (at the bottom of the page, “Future Workshops”) is ready for registration, just use the “Contact” button above to send me an email.
PhotoCon KC, March 19-21, 2026 – I’m happy to announce that I’ve been invited to be one of the speakers at a three-day photography conference in Kansas City (actually, Overland Park, KS) in March. My presentation will be on what it’s like to cover the Kansas City Chiefs for the past five years for AP Images, which involves much more than just shooting the game. You can find all the details for the conference here, as well as how to register. Hope to see you there!
Portugal, April 14-25, 2026 – My wife and I visited Portugal during a vacation in 2024, and I thought, “this place would make a great photo trip.” And now it will. My old friend Rene Bastien of Highlight Photo tours followed up our vacation with a scouting trip in 2025, and has put together an excellent photo itinerary for April of 2026 that the two of us will lead. We’ll spend a week exploring areas on the mainland, including Lisbon, Porto and Sintra, then fly to the Azores for a few more days around Sao Miguel. You can find all the details for the trip here. The trip is currently sold out.
The Palouse, June 8-13, 2026 – While the Washington Palouse has become a favorite destination for photographers, most people don’t realize you can find the same beautiful scenes, without the crowds, just across the border in Idaho. That’s where we’ll spend the bulk of our time, and I’ll be joined by lifelong Idaho resident (and excellent photographer!) Jim Coleman. This will be the fourth trip we’ve led to this area, so have lots of good spots to share with you. You can find all the details for the trip here. The trip is currently sold out, but contact me if you’d like to be added to the waitlist.
Costa Rica, June 22 – July 3, 2026 – If you’re looking for an international trip that’s easy to get to and offers a tremendous variety of photo opportunities, you need to conside Costa Rica. Wildlife from birds to mammals to butterflies, rainforest, waterfalls, volcanoes, beaches and welcoming people who are happy to share their stories and skills. As I started planning this trip, I realized what a mistake I’d made by not returning earlier. You can find all the details for the trip here. If you have any questions, or would like to reserve a spot contact me.
Page. Bryce and Monument Valley, Sept. 7 – 12, 2026 – Horseshoe Bend, slot canyons, Bryce National Park and Monument Valley – we’re going to do all of that in early September. Another small-group trip, I’m limiting it to just six clients. We do have to start on Labor Day, but our reward for that is moonless nights, especially important for our private, Navajo-guided night shoot in Monument Valley. You can find all the details for the trip here. I’m sorry to say it’s currently sold out, but let me let me know if you have any questions, or would like to be on the waitlist in case of cancellations.
France, Sept. 24 – Oct. 4, 2026 – Another trip planned and operated by Highlight Photo Tours, Rene used his extensive knowledge of France to put together an exceptional trip. With Paris, Normandy, Brittany and the Loire Valley (plus Mont Saint Michel!) on the schedule, we’ll be visiting fabulous places every single day. You can find all the details for the trip here. Contact Rene if you have any questions, or to sign up. The trip is sold out, but we’re taking names in case there’s a cancellation.
Namibia, April 23 – May 7, 2027 – This will be the fourth trip I’ve led to Namibia, and the second with Mark Comon, founder of the Creative Photo Academy. While most photographers think “wildlife” when they hear about Africa, in this case you should also be thinking, “amazing landscape opportunities.” We’ll visit one of only two quiver tree forests on the continent, some of the tallest, most colorful sand dunes in the world (with a “pan” of ancient, blackened trees) and an old mining town being reclaimed by the desert. Plus some night photography, a visit to the Namib people and tour a modern township. Oh, and there’s wildlife too! The last few days of our trip will be spent in Etosha National Park, one of the crown jewels of Africa. Plus, we’ve added an extra day this time to expand what we’re able to do. You can find all the details for the trip here. Contact me if you have any questions. You can read a story about last year’s trip here.

Online Classes
Online Landscape Photography class – While COVID forced me to cancel most of my in-person workshops in 2020, it’s also gave me time to create some online classes. The first of those is on Landscape Photography. I teach it live, via Zoom, over three evenings with 4.5 hours of content. Send me a note if you’d like information about the next time I plan to teach it. And you can watch a video preview of the class here.
Online Night Photography class – The second online class I’ve created is on Night Photography, where I also teach Light Painting and Low Level Lighting. I teach it live, via Zoom, over three evening (in three consecutive weeks) with 4.5 hours of content. Send me a note if you’d like information about the next time I plan to teach it. You can watch a video preview of the class here.
Online Wildlife Photography class – This is the third of my online classes, and covers what I’ve learned and teach guiding wildlife photography trips over the past 20 years. It’s taught live, via Zoom, over three nights (in three consecutive weeks) with 4.5 hours of content. You can see a video preview of some of the topics, as well as how I teach them, here. Contact me if you’d like to find out the next time I’m offering this class.
Online Mastering Flash class – For my fourth online class, I’m teaching how to use flash as a creative tool, in everything from portraiture to landscape photography. It’s taught live, via Zoom, over three nights (in three consecutive weeks). The presentation has nearly 600 slides in it that are presented over 4.5 hours. Send me a note if you’d like information about the next time I plan to teach it. You can get a preview of some of the topics, as well as how I teach them, here.
